Not afraid

IMG_5816A storm is raging outside as I write.  It is a real visual for my brain to think about this light and dark; of talking with you about what this means.  The rain hits so hard on the window I don’t know whether to stay here or take cover.

But you are calling me Lord.  You call for light in our dark world; not like this storm blowing outside with humidity hanging heavy and  flashes of lightning in the rumbling skies.  You say, “do not be afraid of them – them –  those who will attack wanting to destroy me as you said they would.  There’s the real storm, Lord,  destructive like those who hate.  I don’t want to be afraid but strong so tell me again how you are in control.  Because it doesn’t look like there is anywhere to hide.  The power is off and the darkness is overwhelming.

But you’ve already seen it all because you are God and you know the outcome.  Nothing is new to you.  Your command is for me to trust – to listen – even in the dark, and then,  to speak in the light.  These words,  whispered in my ears – should be proclaimed on the rooftops you say.  But I am weak Lord.  My circle is small; I am not a great preacher, speaker or writer. These are excuses I could try to use; but they are weak even to my own ears.  You know I love you and cannot do anything but choose to rise above it.  You affirm me once again and give me strength as you say a second time; do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.

Matthew 10:24-33

Yes!  You are the only one I fear, the one I kneel before.  My judgement day will come and I pray you say, well done good and faithful servant – not, who are you?  Do not be afraid, as you tell me a third time – because you are with me and will not abandon me.  You know the hairs on my head – on my counter and on the floor and you bless me in telling me how much I mean to you.  This brings my heart great joy and I am so grateful to be your beloved daughter.

Peace comes in knowing it is not just to me you say this – but to everyone – all mankind; all who will acknowledge you before others.  Thank you Father.  What a gift you give us in the words of you son Jesus.  O keep our ears open to hear you and our voices strong to sing your praise all the day long.  When we don’t know where to go or what to do let no one be afraid but call upon your strength.  Help us to share these words do not be afraid with those who need to hear them.  You are the light, shine on us all.  Show us the way Lord.  We trust in you.
