A Gathering

papichicoOn a little vacation with many of my family….. and as I read today’s responsorial Psalm 102 tonight after a long day, I couldn’t help but think of how delighted the Lord must have been for us to be gathered together.

The children of your servants shall abide,
and their posterity shall continue in your presence,
That the name of the LORD may be declared on Zion;
and his praise, in Jerusalem,
When the peoples gather together
and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.

R. The Lord will build up Zion again, and appear in all his glory.

When fear strikes

Probably one of the most known passages in Scripture is in today’s Gospel (Matthew 14:22-36).  During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea.  When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified.  “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.  At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

Fear strikes at the heart of all of us; it can make us freeze, take flight or be frightened.  It can become debilitating; often rendering the loss of common sense.  I’ve had great fear – I can’t imagine there isn’t anyone who hasn’t at some time in their life.  Your adrenaline begins to rise and heart beats at a rapid pace, flashing thoughts of everything negative occur.

The faith Peter had to get out of the boat was phenomenal but Continue reading

Judging or being judged

diet sodaHow do we go about our days without feeling judged or casting a judging thought?  Do I answer a question or act in light of how I think someone will think of me?  In today’s Gospel, Herod really didn’t want to kill John the Baptist but he told the daughter of his wife Herodiaus she could have anything because of the dance she performed for him and his guests.

“because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given, and he had John beheaded in the prison.”  Exert Matthew 14:1-12

Stinkin’ Thinkin

me at birthI am a cradle-Catholic – meaning baptized ten days after birth and raised in a household that practiced the faith.  Baptism was a seed of my Catholic faith that sprung up from time to time; it seemed to die off and even lay dormant other times.  I’m no great scholar or saint today but because God planted it within my heart, it produced new life when I finally took the time to care for it.

Jesus came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue.  They were astonished and said, “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds?  Is he not the carpenter’s son?  Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?  Are not his sisters all with us?  Where did this man get all this?”  And they took offense at him.  Exert from Matthew 13:54-58

New and Old

40 weeksI’m in the front half of an “at home” retreat with a friend using the book 40 weeks  by Fr. William Watson, SJ.  We are in week 11.  I am to write a letter to Jesus asking for his help and healing in my life story; a snapshot of my whole life – in 1,000 words.  That’s a tough one …. a thousand words is like 15 minutes of thought and typing!  Covering my Continue reading

Busy Girl

Resized_20200729_120410Many times I’ve heard people comment to me “busy girl” as I speak about what fills my day.  Mom taught us that way.  She would take on projects no matter what time of the day or night.  There was always chores – piles of laundry, ironing or folding.  Clothes to sort, cabinets to clean, food to make.  When my parents got a second Continue reading

Ears to hear

Screenshot 2020-07-28 21.42.55I just finished boiling, cutting and freezing 60 ears of corn.  It’s not a bad job, not exactly fun but come winter the taste of fresh picked and quickly frozen sweet corn is a taste everyone in my family loves.  Illinois is the land of corn.  You see it stretching for Continue reading

More parables

treeToday Jesus tells us more on the parables of the mustard seed and the leavening.  I love these stories and so do my 3-6 year old students in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd class at our parish.  The children can’t believe the seed is so small and yet how it will grow so big!  The yeast Continue reading
